The short answer

The two-litre Klarstein, without paying for the big one

It is the two-litre version of the Vanilla Sky Family family: the same approach, 70 watts less and half a litre less bowl. In exchange it costs considerably less and keeps the best of the house: it holds the cold for an hour after finishing. Watch the name, which is too close to its big sister's.

How well it works

Four things you notice
in use, not on the box

How the ice cream comes out

Creamy at 180 W, the same as the ELISA or the HF320. The texture comes from the formula.

How long it really takes

Klarstein quotes 30 to 40 minutes. The fuller you fill the bowl, the longer it takes.

Day to day

Steel body and removable parts: cleaning is straightforward.

Footprint

27 × 27 × 31 cm and 14.3 kg. Compact in footprint, but heavy.

An hour of cold

It does not switch off when it finishes

When the churning ends, the cold-holding kicks in and lasts an hour. That is far more leeway than others give: you can leave it working and go and fetch the tubs without the ice cream softening in the bowl meanwhile.

The balance

What it gains
and what you have to accept

The best of it
  • It keeps the cold for a whole hour after finishing
  • 180 W and two litres: the standard measure of its bracket
  • Stainless steel body and removable parts
  • LED screen with timer
  • Considerably cheaper than the 2.5 L Vanilla Sky Family
What you have to accept
  • It does not make yoghurt: the family's “Frozen Yoghurt” is yoghurt ice cream, not fermentation
  • The name gets confused with the Vanilla Sky Family, which is the 2.5 L, 250 W one
  • Amazon shares its reviews with the other variants: the score is not for this model alone
  • It weighs 14.3 kg for a two-litre bowl

Same compressor and same bowl, and this one does ferment yoghurt.

The verdict

Would we buy it?
Yes, if you want a Klarstein without the size

It gives the same as any other 180-watt, two-litre machine, with one clear advantage: the hour of cold-holding. The reason to choose it over the Vanilla Sky Family is price and space; the reason not to is that if you are going to fill the bowl often, half a litre more is welcome. And do not count on it for yoghurt.

Answers to your questions

Frequently asked questions

Isn't it the same as the Vanilla Sky Family?

No, and it is easy to get them mixed up. The Vanilla Sky has 180 W and 2 litres; the Vanilla Sky Family or Multi Edition has 250 W and 2.5 litres. Amazon groups them in a single listing, and that is where the contradictions on its page come from.

Does it make yoghurt?

No. None of the family ferments yoghurt: what they call “Frozen Yoghurt” is churning an already-fermented base. The manual mentions no heating function.

What is cold-holding for?

So the ice cream does not soften in the bowl if you do not take it out at once. It lasts an hour, more than almost any other gives.

How long does a batch take?

Between 30 and 40 minutes according to the manufacturer, longer the fuller the bowl is and the more sugar the mix carries.

Do you have to pre-freeze anything?

No. It has a compressor: switch it on and it starts chilling on its own.

Are the reviews for this model?

Not exactly. Amazon spreads the reviews across the variants of the same listing, so that score includes the Vanilla Sky Family too. We say so because it is worth knowing before trusting the number.
