Review · Compressor ice cream maker

H. Koenig HF320

The same 180 W compressor and the same 2-litre bowl as the ELISA, without the yoghurt programme. And when it finishes, the cold-holding function starts on its own.

The short answer

The sensible buy if you don't need yoghurt

It shares with the ELISA what really decides the result: a 180-watt compressor and a two-litre bowl. What you lose is the yoghurt programme; what you gain is a cold-holding function that starts on its own when it finishes. If yoghurt does not interest you, it is the more rational of the two.
Ideal if you are only going to make ice cream and sorbet

Our score, after reading the reviews one by one.

How the ice cream turns out
Creamy from the first batch with the same 180 W as the ELISA.
Ease of use
Three buttons and a display: you get it without opening the manual.
Capacity
A two-litre bowl, the same as the big ones in its bracket.
Quality and price
Fewer reviews than the Springlanes, but very consistent in score.
How well it works

Four things you notice
in use, not on the box

How the ice cream comes out

Creamy and with no crystals with the compressor at 180 W. The texture still depends on the formula.

How long it really takes

The manufacturer quotes 30 to 50 minutes, depending on the amount and the recipe.

Day to day

Removable non-stick steel bowl: it comes out whole and washes without a fight.

What's included

Measuring cup and ice cream scoop in the box, with nothing to buy separately.

And it keeps the cold in too

It does not switch off when it finishes

When it finishes churning it does not switch off: the cold-holding function starts on its own. That is time to tidy up, prepare the mould or fill the tub without the ice cream softening inside the bowl.

The balance

What it gains
and what you have to accept

The best of it
  • The same 180 W compressor and the same 2 L bowl as the ELISA
  • It keeps the ice cream cold when it finishes, with no button to press
  • Removable non-stick steel bowl, easy to wash
  • Measuring cup and scoop in the box
  • A brand with service support in Spain
What you have to accept
  • It does not make yoghurt: the “frozen yoghurt” in the title is churning an already-fermented base
  • Less accumulated experience than with the Springlanes
  • The recipe booklet doesn't give balanced formulas; the recipe is up to you

The verdict

Would we buy it?
Yes, if you don't care about yoghurt

It is the most rational buy in its bracket: it puts up the same 180 watts and the same two litres as the ELISA, and adds cold-holding when it finishes. The only thing it does not do is real yoghurt. If that is not in your plans, here you pay for what you will actually use.

Answers to your questions

Frequently asked questions

What do I lose against the ELISA?

Only the yoghurt function. It has the same 180 W compressor and the same 2-litre bowl, so the ice cream comes out the same.

How long does a batch take?

About 40 minutes. It comes out creamy but soft: an hour in the freezer and it has gelato-shop body.

What does it do when it finishes churning?

It starts on its own and keeps the ice cream cold, so it does not melt if you are not there.

Do you have to pre-freeze anything?

No. It is a compressor machine: switch it on and off it goes, with no night in the freezer beforehand.

Are two litres too much for home?

The bowl is 2 L and never gets filled right up. Count on a good litre and a half per batch, which is more than enough at home.

Do I need to buy anything else?

Not to get started: it comes with a measuring cup and an ice cream scoop. What you do need is a balanced recipe, and that is what the calculator provides.
