H. Koenig HF340

The HF320's big sister: the same 180 watts and the same 2-litre bowl, but upright, with an LCD display and cold-holding.

The short answer

The same recipe as the HF320, upright

It shares with the HF320 what matters: a 180-watt compressor and a two-litre bowl. What changes is the shape — this one is tall and narrow instead of wide and low — and it adds an LCD display. If the gap on your worktop is deeper than it is wide, this one fits where the other does not.
Ideal if you have more depth than width on the worktop

How the ice cream turns out
Creamy with the same 180 W as the rest of its bracket.
Ease of use
LCD display and timer; you operate it without opening the manual.
Capacity
A two-litre bowl, like the big ones in its range.
Quality and price
With a much longer track record than the HF320, and rated similarly.
How well it works

Four things you notice
in use, not on the box

How the ice cream comes out

Creamy and with no crystals with the compressor at 180 W. The texture is still down to the formula.

How long it really takes

The manufacturer quotes 30 to 50 minutes depending on the amount and the recipe.

Day to day

Removable steel bowl and a recipe booklet in the box. Switch it on and off it goes.

Footprint

31.5 × 27 × 36 cm: it is tall and narrow, the opposite of the HF320.

Upright, not horizontal

The same machine in another format

That is what really separates it from the HF320: the same power and the same bowl, but spread upwards instead of sideways. It takes 31.5 cm of frontage against its sister's 42, so it fits in gaps the other cannot. In exchange it needs more clearance above to open the lid.

The balance

What it gains
and what you have to accept

The best of it
  • The same 180 W compressor and the same 2 L bowl as the HF320
  • Upright format: it fits where a wide ice cream maker does not
  • LCD screen with timer
  • Cold-holding function when it finishes
  • Recipe book and removable bowl included
What you have to accept
  • It does not make yoghurt
  • It needs clearance above to open the lid
  • It usually costs more than the HF320 without giving more litres
  • The recipe booklet doesn't give balanced formulas; the recipe is up to you

The verdict

Would we buy it?
Yes, if upright suits you better

It gives exactly the same ice cream as the HF320, because inside it is the same machine. The reason to choose this one is the gap: 31.5 centimetres of frontage against 42. If that is what decides in your kitchen, go ahead. If the format makes no difference to you, compare prices: they move around, and the HF320 does the same job.

Answers to your questions

Frequently asked questions

How does it differ from the HF320?

In the format. Inside they are the same machine: 180 watts and two litres. This one is tall and narrow (31.5 cm of frontage) and the HF320 is wide and low (42 cm). Choose by the gap you have.

Does it make yoghurt?

No. It makes ice cream, sorbet and yoghurt ice cream, which is churning an already-fermented base. To ferment real yoghurt you need the ELISA or the Severin EZ 7406.

How long does a batch take?

Between 30 and 50 minutes according to the manufacturer. The fuller you fill the bowl and the more sugar the recipe carries, the longer it takes.

Do you have to pre-freeze anything?

No. It has its own compressor: switch it on and it starts chilling, with nothing to put in the freezer the night before.

Does it fit in a cupboard?

It weighs 12.2 kg and is 36 cm tall, so it is not one to put away and get out daily. It also needs clearance above to open the lid.

Is the recipe book it comes with any use?

To get started, yes; to reach gelato-shop texture, no. The balanced formulas are down to you: use the calculator and adjust sugars and solids.
