UNOLD 48830 Doppio

Two independent 1.2-litre bowls, each with its own control. It is the only one in our catalogue that makes two flavours at once, without waiting for the first batch to finish.

The short answer

The only one that makes two flavours at once

Every other home ice cream maker has the same bottleneck: one batch, one flavour, and then you wait. The Doppio has two bowls with a control each, so you can turn out the ice cream and the sorbet at the same time. It pays for that in size and weight, and in Spain it pays for it in price too.

Our score, after reading the reviews one by one.

How the ice cream turns out
A 250-watt compressor shared between the two bowls: creamy and with nothing to pre-freeze.
Ease of use
One rotary knob per bowl. No display and no menus: you turn it and it works.
Capacity
1.2 litres per bowl, 2.4 in total. Each gives two or three servings.
Quality and price
It does something no other one does. In Spain, even so, you pay a lot for it.
How well it works

Four things you notice
in use, not on the box

How the ice cream comes out

The 250 watts are shared between the two bowls, so in cold per litre it is much like a 180 W working alone. With both full, do not expect to go any faster.

How long it really takes

UNOLD quotes about 30 minutes with the mix already cold. The advantage is not taking less time: it is that in that half hour two flavours come out instead of one.

Day to day

The two bowls are operated separately: you can start one and put the other in ten minutes later. There is nothing to pre-freeze.

Footprint

40.9 cm wide and 19 kg. It is the biggest and heaviest of all the ones we analyse.

What no other one has

Two flavours in the same half hour

With ice cream at home, the limit is never the machine: it is the queue. You make vanilla and then, if you want lemon sorbet, you wait for the bowl to be emptied, washed and chilled again. The Doppio breaks that with two bowls and two independent controls. It is the only one of the twenty machines we have analysed that does it, and that is why it is here.

The verdict

Would we buy it?
If you make two flavours, yes

It is the only one in the catalogue that solves the queue, and the queue is the real limit of homemade ice cream. If at your house it is always two — the children's ice cream and the grown-ups' sorbet — you notice this every Sunday. What has to be accepted is the size, the 19 kilos and, in Spain, a price that is considerably lower in Germany.

Answers to your questions

Frequently asked questions

Does it really make two flavours at once?

Yes. They are two separate 1.2-litre bowls with a control each, and they work independently: you can start one and put the other in later.

Are the 250 watts split or combined?

They are shared. With both bowls full, the cold per litre is like that of a 180-watt machine working alone. The advantage is the queue, not the speed.

How much room does it really take?

40.9 cm wide, 38 tall and 19 kg. It is the biggest and heaviest we have analysed: it needs a permanent spot.

Do you have to pre-freeze anything?

No, it has its own compressor. As with all of them, it is best to put the mix in already cold from the fridge.

Does it make yoghurt?

No. It has no display or digital timer either: one rotary knob per bowl and little else.

Is it worth it compared with buying two ice cream makers?

It takes up less room than two machines and plugs in only once. But if one flavour per batch works for you, a single two-litre bowl saves you a good deal.
