Lello 4080 Musso Lussino
Seventeen kilos of stainless steel with two buttons and a timer. This is the machine bought by people who never want to change machine again. Note: the one Amazon sells runs on 110 volts.
The only one in the comparison that works without stopping
The brand is Musso; in the United States it is sold under the Lello name. The bowl holds a litre and a half, but the figure that matters is another one: the machine turns out three quarts an hour, nearly three litres, batch after batch and without resting. No other home machine does that.
Our score, after reading the reviews one by one.
The best in the whole comparison. The fixed steel bowl and the paddle scraping against it give a texture that removable-bowl machines don't reach.
Two buttons and a timer. There are no programmes and no screens because they aren't needed.
1.5 quarts, a litre and a half: five servings per batch.
That you can run it all afternoon without the compressor asking for a break.
Four things you notice
in use, not on the box
How the ice cream comes out
Dense and fine, gelateria grade. It is the benchmark the others are measured against.
Back-to-back batches
Three quarts an hour means two batches an hour, one after the other. For four flavours in an afternoon it has no rival.
The fixed bowl
It doesn't come out: the ice cream is lifted from above with a spatula. That is the price of direct contact between steel and cold.
Size and weight
45.7 × 30.5 × 28 centimetres and 17.2 kilos. You put it somewhere once and there it stays.
Why the best one doesn't come apart
On almost every home machine the bowl lifts out, and between the bowl and the cooling circuit there is an air gap that costs efficiency. Here the bowl is part of the machine: the cold goes straight into the steel and the paddle scrapes the wall without leaving a frozen layer. You clean it with the machine in front of you, which is awkward, and in exchange you get a texture no removable bowl delivers.

What it wins and what you have to accept
- Its own compressor: no need to pre-freeze the bowl the night before
- The cheapest in the compressor range
- LCD screen with timer
- Removable steel bowl
- The one that takes least worktop space
- 135 W and 1.2 litres: the lowest rung of its brand
- It falls short as soon as you want more quantity or more flavours
- It does not make yoghurt
- The recipe booklet doesn't give balanced formulas; the recipe is up to you

Would we buy it? If ice cream is a serious matter, yes
It is the only one in the whole comparison that works like a small workshop machine: nearly three litres an hour, batch after batch, with a texture no other home machine reaches. It weighs seventeen kilos, the bowl doesn't come out, and it costs what several of the others cost together. The one Amazon sells runs on 110 volts; in Europe the closest in ambition is the Magimix Gelato Expert.
Frequently asked questions
Does it work in Europe?
The unit Amazon sells, no: it runs on 110/120 volts and 60 hertz.
Why doesn't the bowl come out?
Because it is welded to the cooling circuit. With no air gap in between, the cold arrives sooner and the ice cream comes out finer.
How much ice cream does it really make?
A litre and a half per batch, and close to three litres an hour running batches back to back.
Do you have to pre-freeze anything?
No. It has a built-in compressor and starts up cold.
Is it easy to clean?
That is its worst point: the bowl is washed with the machine in front of you, with no way to take it to the sink.
Which would we buy instead?
In Europe, the Magimix Gelato Expert. In the United States, the Whynter ICM-200LS if budget is the deciding factor.
